(e.g it is morally good or right to compete) I would think that there is nothing moral about the motivation of 'being better than someone'
I think that innovation and creativity are not only possible without competition but are best developed in a non competitive way, as you are focused on trying to make something new rather than trying to beat something or someone else.
I think consumerism is not a good thing (I can explain more if you would like :))
I think that to progress in a skill (for a company or otherwise), working together on the skill rather than against each other proves more useful.
Yes the world is competitive, but this does not make competition good.
I hope this has adressed all your points and that you will change your mind about competition :)

Re: Why Competition is a Good Thing

Competition is inherent in us as well as cooperation, there are extremes of both, and right now in our current day and age we are seeing the extremes of Competition. I do not agree with our modern day version of Capitalism, the extreme competition on which it is based on is destroying third-world countries instead of allowing them them to grow. I agree that competition is apart of us all, but don't think its the only thing that matters, there comes a time when you have to step back and question whether what you're doing is right. As for Apple and Microsoft, both Bill Gates and Steve Jobs stole ideas, they did not come up with all these great ideas completely by themselves. The company that came up with the computer system that we use today doesnt even exist anymore. So yes maybe it was competition that brought both companies to where they are today, but whether it was honest competition is another question.

Re: Why Competition is a Good Thing

and it also leads to a decreased creativity and independent thinking. Competition overrides the passion aspect!

Re: Why Competition is a Good Thing

It may be a reality but if the lesson is learned early in life to try to achieve to gain acceptance which creates acceptance hungry adults. The fact is every child that goes to school is their to gain skills so they can move through life and function independently while maintaining a healthy happy life. If you are killing yourself for approval, that kind of negates the pursuit of happiness philosophy

Re: Why Competition is a Good Thing

All your points are true. But its also true that competition can lead to
price wars, competency of the competitor problems and negative
marketing by the competitors thereby giving us wrong data. What I opine
is that competition is a market force or social force. Just like a pen
or a nuclear bomb, blame cannot be attributed to it. It's how we use it
that decides whether competition is good or bad.

I don't agree
that without competition Microsoft and Apple would not have developed
windows O/S or the I-pad. Maybe it would have taken time but the end
product would have been much better, not that I mean that these products
are bad. But why microsoft? What about the Wilbur and Orville Wright
and the modern airplane? What drove them to invent the first plane! What
about the wheel? Did my great x billion grandfather build it because
of competition? No-he invented it as he felt the need for it. Need and
competition follow parallel tracks but need stays a little ahead. It is
when competition starts leading and need lagging, then the problems
start.
Sinclair Lewis' " Arrowsmith" is a book which faces this dilemma head on
without any feints. It's a story of a doctor who has to choose between competition and need.
Irwin Shaw's book on Vincent Van Gogh (its a novel ) also deals with it. I cannot recall
title now.
I would humbly advise my friends here to read Lewis' novel 'Martin Arrowsmith' not only because of this rhetoric biut because it will fall in my list of "1001 books you have to read before you die". It is a profoundly moving novel.

Re: Why Competition is a Good Thing

All your points are true. "Competition is essential because it leads to one very important thing, innovation." Not true. Competition leads to unnecessary enemys. Scientific studies have shown, that people that have no competition when they have to solve a problem, come to more creative and innovative results, than those who were competing.

Re: Why Competition is a Good Thing

nice statement i was just looking online for that question and i found it u gise really helped me finished my essay

Re: Why Competition is a Good Thing

You have to compete to live. There are lots of known problems e.g. the public goods problem, externalities, short-termism (look them all up!!!) not to mention the moral argument that that competition is undemocratic.
There is also a psychological question which asks "What is the effect of competition on human development and happiness?". I think, if you looked, you would find that most of the evidence from social science says that competition has many negative effects on the human animal, and the development of communities.

Re: Why Competition is a Good Thing

i'm doing competitve sports and this has helped alot even though it doesn't revolve around the sport side.

Re: Why Competition is a Good Thing

And next time when your commenting about enron check past history, cause they don't have a good one.

Re: Why Competition is a Good Thing

No alison they couldn't have gotten as far as they are without competition because competion is that thing which gives us the boost to keep going. Competition proves itself over and over, yet on occasion it's made out to be evil. The complainers need to realize they too benefit from healthy competition. When a child competes in school and does well, we all benefit if he/she become a doctor, teacher, scientist, etc. In the real world we will always experience competition, and this is a good thing!

Re: Why Competition is a Good Thing

Do you know who says "is not a matter of winning or loosing, but to have fun"? Greed is not competition. When businesses have to compete for your business, it drives the price down. Customers will not go back to your business if you do not make your product well especially when they can buy it elsewhere. If there is no competition and customers are forced to buy from only one source, then the price goes up. The consumer has no options.

John F. It is these kind of assumptions that cause companies like Enron to be so innovative that they are illegal. The economic crisis was caused by competition to make more and more money. They do not get new standards they find ways of producing lower standards to be more competitive in price. this page is portrays a complete lack of knowledge.

Re: Why Competition is a Good Thing

Thanks.
